Monday Gardening Club

Last week I learned some things about gardening. I planted the onions the way they came. I just loosened the roots a bit and plopped them in the garden. Apparently, you are supposed to separate them into individual onion plants so they actually have room to turn into an onion. Oops!

I also learned that my lettuce was ready.

I also learned that it is yummy!

So many people are thrown off by onions and plant them as one big clump. Dividing them up can be a pain, but totally worth it.

Your lettuce looks great! I can't wait for mine to be big enough to eat.

Don't feel bad. I learned the same thing about garlic a few years back lol.

Eating like a rabbit from your own garden is the best!

how do you know when your lettuce is ready? I have bugs and they are ticking me off. I had a beauty of a green pepper going and a bug got into it and had a nice meal. Grrrr

So cool the being eating the fruits of your labor! I miss having a garden.

Fiona, here's how we're doing it. When the leaves are about ummmm...I guess palm size-ish (smaller or bigger is fine), I break each leaf off. We have about twelve lettuce plants growing (next year I'm planting more) so that gives us enough for salad for two. Princess doesn't eat lettuce, yet.

You can keep picking leaves off this way. Eventually the plant will bolt/go to seed. When this happens I'm told you can cut it back. It will keep doing this, but eventually the lettuce will get bitter. Then let it bolt and you can take the seeds for next year.
