The maid? Really?

After a frustrating morning yesterday, I emailed the Lizard King to vent.

Our daughter is going to send me over the edge. We have been arguing constantly. She is playing on the drum table by the slider. The dog wanted to go out. I was in the kitchen cleaning up. She asked me to let the dog out. I was about to take all the recyclables to the garage. I told her that if she took care of the recyclables, I'd let the dog out. She actually agreed. I let the dog out. She then complained that she felt like the maid. There was too much stuff. I told her that perhaps next time she can simply let the dog out. Then she left the stuff on the counter for me to take out and told me that the dog was already out.

His response? "My entire area of coworkers is laughing hysterically."

First I thought, I'm so glad to be here for entertainment value...then I thought, hey, maybe this would make a good blog post! ; )

Too funny!! My daughter always says things like "what did you do all day" after I ask her to do something!Kids!

My sister Lisa's middle boy said to her one day when she asked him to do something (he was four; in a very cold tone, too): "You are such an evil step-mother." Funny for lots of reasons, but mostly because Lisa is his "real" mom. We still call her that when she gripes about her boys, now all in their twenties and painfully single. We call her the evil "step-mother-in-law-to-be".

It seems to be a trend. Recently I brought a stack of freshly washed clothes, nicely folded to my daughter's room and asked her to please put them away. Her response to my request, "I am not your slave, Mom." I eyed her in disbelief, hoping for a grin or something, but she was dead serious. I said to her, that I was not her slave either. She then replied, that, since I was already in her room, I might as well put her clothes away for her. To which I said to her that since she was also in the room, and the clothes were hers, she could just do it herself... and added, that the next load of her own laundry she could wash, dry and fold herself.

Now, if you think that she hurried to put away the pile, you are mistaken, dearest. As I lay the pile on her bed, she rolled her eyes at me and announced that it sucked to have so many chores these days. Tough life, girlfriend. I have the longer breath. She is just going to have to suck it up.

Violet's standard response to chore requests is, "Maybe you could do it." Hmmmm, maybe not little girl.

So this isn't a phase if kids of all ages are doing it. We work so hard to be good parents, really good parents. What the heck is going on?

Take a day off from cooking and cleaning and see what happens.

I'm trying not to laugh, I promise, but this sounds so familiar.

Eve, age 9, is fond of exclaiming, with an exasperated sigh: "Why do I have to do EVERYTHING around here??"

OMG, Rachel! Princess has said that, too.

Rooster X...hmmmmm....I think you may be on to something.

Oh my goodness, she's a smart one Shady! Maybe we should start a little maid support group for all the little maids out there! My youngest would be the first to join.

Lisa :)
