Enlighten Me

If you will...

I have noticed a few times over the last couple of weeks people typing meh in their comments on other blogs and on Facebook. What the heck does that stand for? Freckle and I searched, but the only thing we came up with was meh = tch. Huh? Okay, what the heck is tch?

I'm really tired and just don't want to research it any more and, after all, I have all you lovely people out there. I know one of you knows what this is, right?

I got to sleep entirely too late and woke up at 4:30 this morning. Eventually, I did fall back to sleep, but had to wake up and get out of bed and dressed because the electrician was finally coming to give us power in the bedrooms. I thought he might appreciate it if we got out of bed while he worked??? He was a pretty nice guy...maybe we could have stayed in bed. Hmmmm.....

Ok... I actually did look into this awhile back because the word lover in me was dumbfounded by the slew of people who would otherwise use mostly (notice I say mostly) proper grammar, that were using this. It turns out that "meh" is kind of a cultural slang thing, a trendry term, like "wicked awesome" was in the northeast in the 80's (and apparently now as I have discovered through my recent reunion with old friends). There are t-shirts, cups, stickers, and (gasp) BUMPER stickers with this "meh" on it. So, while "wicked" was a geographical slang thing I think "meh" is quite common with a specific nerdy geeky crowd. (? ) I'm not 100% sure but my husband, who is a techy/anime just plain geeky (in a totally hot smart way) guy has a mug from geeks.com and I believe it says "meh"

So there you go friend - maybe I should have saved myself the angst of coming up with a witty post for tomorrow by blogging my answer to you.... hmmmm there is still time.

meh, can't be bothered fact checking this one.

Well, you all are just a wealth of information! I thank you from the bottom of my heart. However, I cannot believe that it is being entered into any dictionary. Oh well, welcome to the new millenium. =)

'Tch' is the old git version of teenybopper 'meh'. Or a reaction to it. Take your pick.

In my world tch comes from some old Scottish expression. I often see it in those dusty old classics I like to read.

As for meh, up til now I thought it was just punk slang as my daughter and all her friends use it regularly. In their world they use it when they want to say something but really have nothing to say. Or so the child just explained to me. I am simply aghast at how much slang has entered our dictionaries these days.

I use "meh" as an expression of being unimpressed.

I heard it first about 8 years ago in that context and it stuck.

Great Blog!
